Big Stonefly Nymphs Caddis Worms by Jerry Kells on Thu, Jul 8

There are some huge stonefly nymphs under the rocks in Chittenango Creek. I don't rcall seeing much of a hatch or seeing them in the air on the creek. They are the common golden stonefly.

Also the bright green caddis worms seem very abundant in the stream as well yet I have never had any luck using an imitation.

Any thoughts.

jerry,
i have tried caddis larva imitations before with no luck as well. its kinda weird to me that an instant change to a pheasant tail or hares ear and you will get fish. i saw tons of em in butternut under rocks in the winter and had no luck with them.

Jerry,

The bigger stoneflies will hatch after dark, making adults less than important as surface imitations. Egg laying females can get the attention of fish. However, once they begin to emerge I feel an adult used in conjunction with a nymph (dry/dropper)can bee effective in pocketwater situations. Not my normal game---but I can see it's value. Just don;t expect to fish stonefly adult dries with much success as a hatch matcher.

Per caddis larvae: I hardly ever fish them in the east. I will rely more on caddis pupa and larva patterns where whities (yes, I enjoy catching Whitefish)or grayling (Europe) are common as they are caddis specialists. That said, I will use things with beads and tails regardless of what rocks show me. The fly is usually the last on my list of concerns.

Chitt. fish respond really well to very standard subjective imitations. I've never found a reason to go beyond them.
