Nine mile? by [no name] on Thu, Jun 3

I fished Nine Mile yesterday for the first time. Downstream from the RR tunnel. Can't say I thought much of it. The water was low and the fish were few and far between. Maybe it was me (likely) but the fishing didn't reach the quality written about here. I hooked (and lost) at the end of nymph drifts a couple that looked like small stockers. Also the flyshop there was closed (?).
Maybe they could have helped. Later I went to Limestone and hooked 8 (landed 4) on dries. I think I'll stay east.

I've been going out about two or three times a week with my father for about 2 hours in the evening, we've both been having great fishing, its been common to have 20+ fish a night each.

I know this probably sounds like a fishing tale but this has been by far the best fishing season on nine mile I've ever had. Largest fish this year has been 17 inches, most have been 14.

All else that I can say is what did you expect? You are fishing new water and heavily fished water at that, take the time to learn the stream and you'll be rewarded, there are so many fish in that creek it would blow your mind.

How many people can honestly say that their first time fishing new water that they did great?

Do not give up on ninemile, caught 26 last friday when the water was the same way, stick with little flies when the water is this low, the fish are spooky so be a little weary of that. I fished that stretch on friday and picked up a few. That whole section always seems to be getting pounded so taking fish there might be tricky. These fish have seen just about everything by now soi think they are picky. The section you fished doesnt have aton of wild fish but i did catch a 13 inch wild brown there on friday, he was a great fighter and had 2 awsome jumps. Try to llook for a different section. There are fish virtually everywhere on the creek.

Brad,
I also agree with you completely fishing there has been crazy this year. i Agree it is really nothing to hit 20 fish there in an evening when these fish are active on sulphurs. Also, My biggest was a 17 incher this year as well, got a 17, and 4 or 5 16's all of which were wild. That is what i love about the stream as well, the chance to hook up into a 17 or 18 inch wild beast!!

Hi there:

- If you are bored of Nine Mile Creek, come on down to Spring Creek in Central PA.

- Fished 6am - 9am Memorial Day. Nailed 12 wild browns, three of which pushed the 16 inch mark. Nice and fat. Also throw in 4 20+ inch suckers for fun as well.

- Used a scud pattern. Dead-drift fishing.

- Sorry, couldn't resist bragging about the fishing down here.

--------------

- About Nine Mile. I am hearing from various folks that the trout fishing has been outstanding this year. Also, the wild rainbows had one heck of a successful spawn last spring, and you should be catching plenty of 4 to 6 inch wild bows.

- The section you fished, from the tunnel downstream is loaded with fish.

- My best advice would be to stand in the middle and fish the edges. Don't forget to hit the riffles (crappy looking water) as well. The stockies like to lay in the pools, and consequently push the wild ones into the riffles.

- Also, it's easier for a trout to feed in shallow water than in deep water (food column is compressed -- higher density of food, not to mention an easier time dealing with the current). So definitely, do not overlook the riffle water.

- Again, please give this section of Nine Mile another look.

P.S. Nursing state boards are scheduled for Monday, June 14th. Can't wait to get them over with.

John,

I've wanted to try Spring Creek. My gf lives in Woolrich so I fish Little Pine and Fishing Creeks.

Any recommendations for Spring Creek?

Also, on a side note, very muddy, heavy flow at 9 mile today. Caught a Brook under the train trestle.
