owego creek by Kevin Proctor on Sun, May 9

I live pretty close to this stream but I have never fished it. Ive spent a few hours online today reading about what seems to be a nice fishery just a few miles to the east of where I live! I do most of my fly fishing on Cayuta Creek and The Genesee River. I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever fly fished this stream and if so what should I expect? Is it a good stream to flyfish or should I just stick to my "normal" streams? Any info would be great.

Thanks
Kevin Proctor

I have never fished the main stem, but i have fished the east and west branches up near Rt.79. I caught a fat 17 or 18 inch brown this year in the east branch. My guess is that it was stocked as a 2 year old last year and held over. I think Cayuta is a better trout stream overall, but the Owego is definitely worth trying.

Kevin,

I love both the west and east branches of the Owego. I fished them all the time when I lived in Ithaca. A few years Back I caught a 20 inch brown out of the ease branch in muddy water. If I had to pick I would say that the west branch is my favorite. Its a little harder to fish but there are less people and there are some parts of the west branch that have great numbers of wild (but kind of small) brook trout. Shoot me an email and we can talk about it if you want.
