Fly patterns for Skaneateles and Owasco by Nick on Tue, May 4

Hello,

I plan to fish Skaneateles and Owasco Lakes from a canoe in a couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what I should be tying up in advance. Smelt patterns? Any color schemes/sizes seem to work particularly well this time of year?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

I have found that wooly buggers to be an effective fly for whatever species you are targeting on Skaneateles. Rainbows and smallies both hit those pretty good. Yellow and black poppers work at dusk for smallmouths. If you are not having any luck with a floating line, try a sinking one. I usually have some luck with one or the other depending on how deep the fish are. I have never fished Owasco.
