Wading at Skaneateles Lake by T O'Reilly on Wed, Apr 7
Does anyone have any input or tips for shallow casting on Skaneateles lake this time of year (April)? Any preferable spots or techniques? Is a canoe nessasary? Thanks a lot.

| I see people fish from the park in the Village and at the boat launch. I don't think wading in either spot would work since it drops off too quick. I would recommend a canoe or kyak. | |

| There is very limited access - One place to cast from shore is at Lordes Camp (owned by the Catholic Diocese)on the east side of the lake. As long as you act civil and pick up after yourself - They have allowed people to fish there for decades... It can get crowded making fly fishing tough - Another spot is to walk down Grout Brook to the mouth on the far south end - It is shallow, muddy, I've tried numerous times to catch cold water species there - The rainbow runs in the spring and fall but haven't caught much but pickerel & small perch. I fish the lake often out of a boat - It's a tough lake to crack for landlocks & rainbows on fly equipment. I've returned to the state launch many a time after exercising my arm with nymphs, streamers with little to show for my efforts only to see some nice stringers caught on marshmallow and worm rigs... Makes it tough to justify with my family the $$$ I spend on expensive toys.. |

| Wade fishing with fly tackle at Skaneateles Lake would be akin to watching paint dry on a damp May afternoon. However, the most effective way to catch trout on Skaneateles when they are in the shallows is with fly tackle. Outfish the nasty marshmallow/worm dunkers 10 to 1 everytime. |
